My wife and I were driving home down Federal Street this past Saturday when the skies opened up and the road quickly turned to a series of ponds nearly the full width, curb to curb.
With the new normal of flash heavy rains, I implore my fellow Greenfielders and, yes, even those who live in other towns, to take responsibility for the street drains in front of their home or work or their typical walking route. I have noticed that some gratings are partly blocked by vegetation and trash, and so streets can flood quickly and deeply, which can be bad news for some cars and drivers, as well as pedestrians caught in the mess.
To avoid this and to help keep the streets safe in times of deluge, clear them of all debris and weeds, and look “up stream” along the curb to see if there are threats to your drain nearby.
We’re all in this together.
